Healthcare
To apply for a health insurance card, you will need to apply to the ministry of health in the province or territory where you live. Apply for your health insurance card as soon as possible after becoming a PR.
Social Insurance Number
A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit identification number given to you for use with income tax, Employment Insurance, Old Age Security pension, and other government programs. You need a SIN to work in Canada. To obtain a permanent SIN, rather than the temporary number you were previously issued, visit your nearest Service Canada Centre. For additional information, please contact Service Canada at 1-800-206-7218 for English or 1-800-808-6352 for French.
On behalf of IRCC, we would like to thank you for your interest in becoming a Permanent Resident in Canada. If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the Client Support Centre at 1-888-242-2100 or visit our website at www.cic.gc.ca.
